SUMMARY:Inkwell May Workshop with Jami Macarty
DESCRIPTION:Join Jami Macarty for “Engine & Echo: Schemes in Poetic Repetition”\n\n\n“Repetition in word and phrase and in idea is the very essence of poetry\,” American poet Theodore Roethke writes in “Some Remarks on Rhythm” (1960). Repetition in poetry connects to our deepest human experiences—the heart pumping blood\, the seasons tilting Earth. \nRepetition is part of daily life. Think of brushing your teeth\, walking the dog\, welcoming spring’s daffodils. Repetition is part of a writing practice. Think of recurrence and accumulation. Think of returning memories\, magic spells\, children’s lullabies\, and family stories. \nUsing material/drafts already written in their notebooks/journals\, participants in this generative workshop will experiment with the mnemonic and musical qualities\, as well as the structural and driving forces of repetition. We will learn some devices of repetition in free verse (anaphora\, epiphora\, polyptoton\, anadiplosis)—the Greek terms are easier to pronounce than you may think!—and explore through writing/revising how repetition builds tension\, creates music\, and shifts meanings\, whether toward the obsessive or the enchanting. \nTo our maker-space\, bring an already-filled notebook\, a new notebook\, and pens full of ink!

SUMMARY:"SOUND" Ekphrastic Poetry Workshop with Ms. AyeVee
DESCRIPTION:Get ready to write wild and vivid poems inspired by art\, with Ms. AyeVee guiding the way!\n\n\nJoin Clark County poet laureate Ashley “Ms. AyeVee” Vargas for a free ekphrastic poetry workshop at the “SOUND” sculpture exhibition. \nWith its roots in Greek literary tradition\, “ekphrasis” is a way of using poetic language to describe and evoke a work of visual art. Ekphrastic poetry may also respond imaginatively to the artwork while creating a separate (discreet) back and forth (dialogue\, collaboration\, interactions\, etc) that expands the meaning of the artwork. Literal or metaphorical\, this kind of poetry is meant to illuminate the intersectional connection between literary and visual artistic mediums. \nThis event is open to poets of all ages and skill levels. \nWriting materials\, mocktails & snacks\, a swag bag of goodies\, and positive vibes are all provided so just bring your creativity with you! \nWhen: \n Saturday\, April 11th from 1-3pm \nWhere: \nClark County Wetlands Park \n7050 Wetlands Park Lane \nLas Vegas\, NV 89122

SUMMARY:Inkwell March Workshop with Dr. Geoffrey Babbitt
DESCRIPTION:Join poet Dr. Geoffrey Babbitt for “Getting More Out of Less: Lyrical Concision\, Line\, and Image in Poetry”\n\n\nClark County Office of Public Arts presents Inkwell Poetry! These monthly online events will feature an accomplished poet mentor who will lead attendees in workshops with unique themes and topics for poets of all ages and experience levels. \nAs C. D. Wright once brilliantly put it\, “Verbal energy on my part is expended on packing words down. I am concerned with density\, setting up a chain reaction using the least amount of verbal material.” \nIn this workshop\, Dr. Babbitt will emphasize both components of that compound word equally—work\, in its scientific sense of transferring energy\, and shop\, in the sense of working with tools and machinery. As such\, participants will be following Wright’s lead\, borrowing her tools\, and emulating her methods. To begin\, the session will focus on how images work and how to build compelling images ourselves. We’ll then use lines and line breaks to apply torque to the images we’ve drafted\, while exerting lyrical compression to generate greater “verbal energy” and more powerful “chain reactions.” Dr. Babbitt will help participants do all this while using “the least amount of verbal material” possible. Join us for what we believe will be a fun and rewarding poetic process! \nAll ages and experience levels are welcome.

SUMMARY:Inkwell February Workshop with Carolyn Oliver
DESCRIPTION:Join poet Carolyn Oliver for her workshop “Dear Friend: On Epistolary Poems” exploring the letter as poetic form. All ages/skills welcome!\n\n\nClark County Office of Public Arts presents Inkwell Poetry! These monthly online events will feature an accomplished poet mentor who will lead attendees in workshops with unique themes and topics for poets of all ages and experience levels. \nEpistolary poems are composed in the form of letters\, and they offer nearly endless opportunities for variation in style and subject. Elegiac or celebratory\, private or public\, bitter or tender\, epistolary poems share an awareness of distance—physical\, temporal\, emotional—between writer and recipient. Join poet Carolyn Oliver to explore how these poems can focus our attention and lead to surprising insights. Following a presentation on epistolary poetry\, attendees will have the opportunity to draft and share their own epistolary poems during a guided workshop. \nDon’t miss out on this chance to experiment with a dynamic poetic form\, gain insight into how contemporary poets approach a centuries-old tradition\, and receive feedback on your own writing from Carolyn Oliver. All ages and skill levels are encouraged to join us!
