SUMMARY:“At the Heart of Nevada: Basin and Range”
DESCRIPTION:Curated By: Julian Kilker\, Checko Salgado\, and Paula Garrett   \nFeb. 23- April 17\, 2026  \nReception: Wednesday\, March 4\, 2026\, 5-7 p.m.   \nOn the 10-year anniversary of the Basin and Range National Monument\, three friends curated a documentary photography and video exhibit documenting this remote region of Nevada—one located several hours by car north of Las Vegas and Southeast of Reno. The monument features 1\,100 square miles of spectacular undeveloped mountains and valleys in southeastern Nevada\, and its protected status preserves geological and historical features for future generations while continuing to provide access for recreation\, grazing\, and military training.   \nThe collaboration behind this exhibit echoes the cooperation among Nevadan volunteers\, artists\, researchers\, locals\, and visitors who enjoy and help protect our state’s wealth. Basin and Range National Monument is the result of an innovative collaboration among multiple stakeholders. At the Heart of Nevada parallels this creation\, focusing on multiple uses of the land and collaborations among these stakeholders. Among the photographs and videos by multiple contributors are representations of geology and history\, ranching\, volunteering\, recreation\, and artistic and military engagement. The photographs and narratives were made during 1999–2001\, during which time Paula Morin photographed wild horse herds in their natural surroundings and recorded discussions with people whose lives are most intimately connected with them. Each black and white photograph was developed\, printed\, and then colored by hand with oil-based paints.\nCurated by Paula Morin and organized by the Nevada Arts Council\, Honest Horses: A Portrait of the Mustang in the Great Basin\, is part of the Nevada Touring Initiative – Traveling Exhibition Program. DESCRIPTION:The photographic practice of Steven Seidenberg explores a material world of the unnoticed\, fixing attention on structures\, environments\, and landscapes often hidden in plain sight. Three photographic series are combined in this exhibition; each focuses on past and present living conditions in a different area of the world (Puglia and Rome\, Italy; Kanazawa\, Japan).
