SUMMARY:Three Generations of Polarized Light Art
DESCRIPTION:In the 1960s\, a time of cross-pollination in art and science\, Austine’s engagement with light and optics was shaped by her discovery of the phenomena of polarized light from her first husband\, astronomer and physicist H. John Wood. In 1967\, Austine developed a new light-based medium that she called Polage. By collaging clear cellophane between cross-polarizing filters\, she began producing full color artworks without using any pigments or dyes. \nSelecting for specific wavelengths from the prismatic spectrum of color in natural light produces her color palette. Colors plucked from light are vibrantly alive and will shift and change as the filters rotate or as the viewer moves about\, making the perception of the art an active component of the work. \nIn 1976\, Austine and her husband\, David Comarow moved to the Las Vegas area. They worked together to establish a long-lasting studio practice and refined her Polage medium and methods of display\, leading to many innovations and commissions over the following decades. Their first studio gallery opened in Boulder City\, Nevada\, in 1985. \nThat same year\, Austine’s eldest daughter\, Cara Wood Ginder\, began working for Austine Studios as an art assistant\, fabricator\, and studio manager. This began a longtime artistic partnership with her mother\, which grew into full design collaboration in later years. \nIn 1998\, Austine’s younger daughter\, Erika Wood\, became part of the studio\, later focusing on designing hybrid production methods that enabled Polage artworks to be created in carefully controlled multiples\, comparable to traditional printmaking. \nAt that time\, Austine Studios entered a long-term relationship with Maui Jim sunglasses\, bringing the medium into dialogue with applied optics and polarized-lens technology as they secured an exclusive on Austine Studios artwork in optical boutiques worldwide. \nIn 2018\, Cara accepted the position of full-time lead artist and studio director of Austine Studios. Her daughter\, Charlotte Ginder\, joined the studio in 2019; the third generation to work in the family business of Polage. \nAfter Austine’s sudden passing in 2020\, Cara\, Erika\, and Charlotte kept up the family legacy as the artists of Austine Studios until it closed in 2025. \nAustine’s art is on view in the permanent collections of the Museum of Science\, Boston; the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science; and Swarthmore College\, among others\, appearing in museums\, hospitals\, public spaces\, and private collections around the world. \nThe nearby Spring Mountains Visitor’s Center\, just outside Las Vegas on Mt. Charleston\, features a 75-foot-long Polage art mural celebrating the flora and fauna of the desert that inspired so much of her work. \nToday Cara and Erika have launched a new collaboration\, Lightread Studios\, where they continue their work together creating polarized light artworks and commissions. \nOn exhibit at Sahara West Library\, 9600 W Sahara Ave. Las Vegas\, Nevada\, through May 2\, 2026.

SUMMARY:Inkwell March Workshop with Dr. Geoffrey Babbitt
DESCRIPTION:Join poet Dr. Geoffrey Babbitt for “Getting More Out of Less: Lyrical Concision\, Line\, and Image in Poetry”\n\n\nClark County Office of Public Arts presents Inkwell Poetry! These monthly online events will feature an accomplished poet mentor who will lead attendees in workshops with unique themes and topics for poets of all ages and experience levels. \nAs C. D. Wright once brilliantly put it\, “Verbal energy on my part is expended on packing words down. I am concerned with density\, setting up a chain reaction using the least amount of verbal material.” \nIn this workshop\, Dr. Babbitt will emphasize both components of that compound word equally—work\, in its scientific sense of transferring energy\, and shop\, in the sense of working with tools and machinery. As such\, participants will be following Wright’s lead\, borrowing her tools\, and emulating her methods. To begin\, the session will focus on how images work and how to build compelling images ourselves. We’ll then use lines and line breaks to apply torque to the images we’ve drafted\, while exerting lyrical compression to generate greater “verbal energy” and more powerful “chain reactions.” Dr. Babbitt will help participants do all this while using “the least amount of verbal material” possible. Join us for what we believe will be a fun and rewarding poetic process! \nAll ages and experience levels are welcome.

SUMMARY:Circus Freaks 8 – Our Showgirl Era
DESCRIPTION:Circus Freaks was born during Creator Christopher Childers’ time working with Cirque du Soleil. There was so much crossover talent\, and he wanted to showcase the things you didn’t see in the shows. Aerialists who could sing\, dancers who could perform aerial skills\, contortionists that were ballet dancers\, and acrobats who could do pretty much everything. He fondly often called them “Circus Freaks” because they trained mercilessly\, kept themselves insanely trim and incredibly flexible—working at their craft constantly. Shooting hoops\, jumping rope\, hand balancing each other\, stretching\, jogging\, lifting weights and singing! A rare group of freaks indeed! This years theme: “Our Showgirl Era” will feature not only the usual spectacular circus acts\, dancers\, singers and comedic shenanigans\, but we are bringing back some of the original dancers and Showgirls from Las Vegas’ classic Showgirl shows\, Les Folies Bergere and Jubilee! This will be one for the books! \nA steamy\, circus-driven variety show. Hugely artistic. Darkly sexy. Hilarious and outrageous. Colorful. Bawdy. Naughty. And always unpredictable.

SUMMARY:Passage
DESCRIPTION:Produced in cooperation with Nevada Conservatory Theatre\, Passage by Christopher Chen is a gripping\, abstract exploration of colonialism\, power\, and human connection set in a fictional occupied country. Inspired by E.M. Forster’s A Passage to India\, the play unfolds through revelatory encounters between citizens of the occupying – and occupied – nations\, raising urgent questions about bias\, understanding\, and the limits of cultural empathy. With minimalist staging and a heightened\, allegorical style\, Passage invites audiences to examine the complexities of privilege and perception in an increasingly divided world. \nTickets can be purchased through the UNLV Performing Arts Center box office.

SUMMARY:The Apiary
DESCRIPTION:The Apiary by Kate Douglas is a darkly comic sci‑fi fable set in 2044\, where the last of Earth’s surviving bees are kept in a synthetic apiary. When two lab assistants accidentally stumble upon the macabre miracle that propels the hive to flourish\, they push ethical boundaries and personal limits in order to sustain the colony. Equal parts unsettling\, absurd\, grotesque\, and hilarious\, The Apiary buzzes with ecological urgency and moral complexity.

Over the past decade she has participated in veteran-led organizing with Veterans for Peace (NYC) and About Face: Veterans Against the War\, as well as the humanitarian aid work of No More Deaths Phoenix\, which provides direct support to address the death and suffering of migrants in the Sonoran Desert. Additionally\, she has been fortunate to participate in\, and learn from\, Indigenous-led water protection and food sovereignty work\, Black-led community healing initiatives\, and trans-led support for detained migrants. She believes in a Free Palestine as part of the broader inevitability of LAND BACK for Indigenous peoples across the earth. \nBorn in Appalachia and raised on military installations\, she is a daughter of the South (east & west). She lives on Muscogee lands in Atlanta\, GA where she trains in Capoeira and wild bird rehabilitation. \nLazarus Letcher (they/them) is a Ph.D. candidate in American Studies at the University of New Mexico\, focusing on linking homophobia and transphobia to white supremacy culture and examining art as resistance. Letcher has written for Autostraddle\, them\, El Palacio\, and the occasional dry academic journal or rad zine. They’ve taught courses like Southwest Studies\, Race and Ethnic Studies\, and Peace and Justice Studies. \nLetcher plays viola in the environmental justice folk band Eileen & the In-Betweens and for art installations/durational performances with the group Stages of Tectonic Blackness. With the support of a National Performance Network Grant\, Stages of Tectonic Blackness set out to the New Mexico desert to create a film\, Blackdom\, performing on and connecting with the land of an abandoned all-Black ghost town. While working on Blackdom\, the group connected with descendants of this former utopian experiment and shared their stories in an exhibit at New Mexico State University. Stages of Tectonic Blackness’ work has been shown at the NMSU Art Museum\, Armory Center for the Arts\, the National Hispanic Cultural Center\, and other museums across the U.S. \nIn addition to this work\, Letcher is a trainer for Sins Invalid\, a performance-based disability justice organization. After surviving a murder attempt involving an assault weapon in 2023\, Letcher has used their voice to push for gun safety and to support other survivors of gun violence. \nErica Vital-Lazare is a Southern-born writer living in Las Vegas where she teaches Creative Writing and Marginalized Voices in Dystopian Literature at the College of Southern Nevada. She is cofounder of The Obodo Collective\, a nonprofit dedicated to combatting multigenerational poverty\, and founder of Our Mothers’ Gardens Book Festival at Obodo Urban Farm\, now in its third year.
