SUMMARY:Desert Altars: A Iyawó’s Journey of Softness\, Surrender & Spirit.
DESCRIPTION:Following the success of her first solo exhibition with Clark County Public Arts in 2024\, Afro-Indigenous multidisciplinary artist Christina Monique Flores-Escobar\, known professionally as Psychedelicchola\, will debut her second solo exhibition\, Desert Altars: A Iyawó’s Journey of Softness\, Surrender & Spirit. \nCreated over the course of her iyaworaje\, the sacred year following initiation in the Lucumí tradition\, Desert Altars is\, to the best of the artist’s knowledge\, the first Nevada-based solo body of work dedicated entirely to an artist’s iyaworaje. Through contemporary painting\, the exhibition documents a year of spiritual transformation\, healing\, ancestral connection\, and self-discovery. \nThe collection also intentionally centers larger-bodied Black and Brown women as sacred subjects. In a visual culture where larger-bodied women\, particularly women of color\, are rarely depicted as divine or spiritually powerful\, Desert Altars reimagines the body as an altar\, challenging conventional narratives surrounding beauty\, worthiness\, and spirituality. \nRooted in the Mojave Desert\, the exhibition brings together painting\, storytelling\, and personal testimony to create an immersive experience that expands conversations around identity\, contemporary spirituality\, representation\, and the evolving landscape of Nevada’s visual arts community. \nWith Desert Altars\, Psychedelicchola continues to position Nevada as a place where innovative contemporary art can emerge from deeply personal narratives while contributing new perspectives to the state’s cultural landscape. Attendees can register by scanning the QR code on the flyer or by visiting the link on her Instagram.

SUMMARY:Sharing Your Story Through Photography\, Written Word\, & Music
DESCRIPTION:Mark Vollmer (photographer/author) and Jim Eaglesmith (singer/songwriter) will help you create your own multimedia community song to be proud of. \nThis multi-session program is designed to help you discover your potential of storytelling via photography\, journaling\, and using your journal words to create a special community song that everyone can take ownership in. The first six sessions will begin with Jim performing an original song related to the week’s theme\, followed by lessons on how to take evocative photographs via Mark’s instructional slide shows and everyone participating in photo shoots at the senior center grounds (indoors or outdoors depending on everyone’s comfort). Journaling our experiences will mark the end of each session. Mark will assign optional photography assignments for you to work on together or individually for the coming days\, and Mark will review those photographs at the beginning of the next session. Each week will cover a different theme of photography & writing as outlined in the curriculum below. This will all culminate in putting your photographs and journal words together for a performance of “One Community”\, a song-in-progress Jim designed to add verses to. Items to bring: paper & pencil/pen and camera of any type (phone\, tablet\, digital\, or film camera).

This event includes the unveiling of a new mural\, “A Desert Dreamscape” by Eric Vozzola\, which was commissioned by NSSA with support from the Office for the Arts.\n\nEric Vozzola is a Las Vegas-based artist known for vibrant color palettes and imagery inspired by the desert landscape he calls home. His work blends fine art and design principles—balancing geometry\, abstraction\, and organic realism to create immersive\, uplifting visual experiences rooted in thoughtful storytelling and site-specific design.\n\nA commissioned muralist since 2014 and a full-time professional artist since 2019\, Vozzola developed his artistic approach alongside a graphic design career after earning his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from the University of Nevada\, Las Vegas in 2011. His background in design\, illustration\, and art direction continues to shape his collaborative and adaptable approach to large-scale public artworks and boutique commissioned works\, alike. As a husband and father raising his family in his hometown of Las Vegas\, Vozzola draws continued inspiration from the desert environment\, community\, and sense of place that have shaped both his life and his work.\n\nEric’s fine art\, design\, and murals can be found throughout southern Nevada and across the country\, including Oregon\, Florida\, and Georgia. He has partnered with public agencies\, schools\, hospitals\, cultural institutions\, global brands\, businesses\, and private collectors — always guided by the belief that art and design should be meaningful\, accessible\, and deeply connected to its environment.
